WHEN TO START WATER POLO
If you've been thinking about giving water polo a try, or you're looking for a way to improve your swimming, fitness, and team sport skills, you might be wondering: when is the best time to start water polo?
The answer is simple: right now.
Whether you're a junior player preparing for school water polo, a swimmer looking for a new challenge or an adult wanting to get back into sport, this is one of the best times of the year to join a water polo club.
Why Now Is the Perfect Time to Start Water Polo for Juniors
At Richmond Water Polo Club, our junior players are currently finishing their winter competition and beginning preparations for the main summer season.
The upcoming summer competition is the largest and most important part of the Victorian water polo calendar, running from Term 4 through to Term 1, 2027, with games played on Sundays.
Starting now gives new players several weeks to:
Learn the basic rules of water polo
Develop ball handling and passing skills
Improve water confidence and fitness
Meet teammates and coaches
Build confidence before playing competition games
Rather than jumping straight into matches, new players have the opportunity to learn the game gradually and arrive at the start of the season ready to take on the opposition.
New to Water Polo? Club Water Polo Is the Best Place to Learn
Many young players first discover water polo through their school sports program. Others are competitive swimmers looking for a team sport that keeps them active in the water.
For both groups, club water polo is one of the best ways to learn.
Training sessions focus on the fundamentals of the game, including:
Swimming and movement in the water
Eggbeater kicking
Passing and catching
Shooting technique
Positioning and game awareness
Teamwork and communication
Players who train regularly with a club often find that their school water polo improves dramatically. The extra training, game experience and coaching help build skills and confidence that can make a real difference when school competitions begin.
If you're hoping to make a firsts school team, move into a higher-level squad, or simply feel more comfortable in the water, there is no better way to develop your game than by playing club water polo.
Water Polo for Swimmers
Water polo is a natural progression for many swimmers.
The sport combines swimming fitness with teamwork, strategy, ball skills and competition. Many players discover that water polo gives them a new challenge while helping them maintain and improve their swimming ability.
If your child enjoys swimming but is looking for something more dynamic and social, water polo could be the perfect fit.
Opportunities for Senior Players
It's not just juniors who can start now.
Our senior summer competition has already begun, but several Richmond teams still have room for new players.
For adults interested in playing water polo, the process is simple:
Come to training, meet the team, and get involved.
We have teams across a range of divisions, from social and developing players through to highly competitive State League teams. Whether you're returning to the sport after a break, moving from another club, or trying water polo for the first time, there may be a team that suits your experience and goals.
